Objectives. To assess and compare the in vitro tribological behaviour of four commercially available self-ligating bracket systems. Methods. The frictional characteristics of the Damon3(TM), SPEED(TM), In-Ovation R(TM), and Time2(TM) bracket systems were studied through the use of a specially designed jig that mimics the three-dimensional movements that occur with dynamic tooth movement during sliding mechanics. Frictional resistance for each bracket system was measured on four stainless steel archwires of differing dimensions. Descriptive statistical analysis for each bracket/archwire combination relating to frictional resistance was performed by way of a two-way, balanced ANOVA for bracket type and wire size. Results. The Damon3(TM) bracket consistently demonstrated the lowest mean resistance to sliding; while the SPEED(TM) bracket produced significantly more resistance to sliding than the other brackets tested for any given archwire. Conclusions. The self-ligation design (passive vs. active) appears to be the primary variable responsible for frictional resistance generated in self-ligating brackets. Passively ligated brackets produce less amounts of frictional resistance.
